Fall Orientation Trip
We start the year with a bang: The Great River Road Trip along the
Connecticut River Valley. The week-long fall fall
orientation trip is a concentrated introduction to the year and the new
class. At every turn there is an opportunity to analyze place and orientation to
the year and the new class.
Not only do working relationships get forged, but we
also start to develop a shared vocabulary and common places of reference.
On the trip students and faculty learn of the tremendous natural and
cultural resources of the Connecticut River as we travel from the mouth
of the river to its headwaters at the Canadian border. Students and
staff also discuss important planning and design issues with
professionals and citizens from communities along the river.

On day 2 of its Great River Road Trip, the Class of
2007 with Prof. Ken Byrne and Paul Cawood Hellmund (back row, right)
cross the Connecticut River on the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry, established in
1769.
